RE-HOMING PROCEDURE FOR DOGS CATS EQUINES

 

Our procedure is as follows

The dogs;cats,equines can be found on the Home- page of our website. You will be able to see pictures of the dogs,equines and information about their temperament, pictures of the cats and their preferences and the type of home they each need.

If you see a dog or cat that you are interested in, call us on 0000000 or email us at agreenvalleyportugal@gmail.com and we will contact you for further information and match you with a suitable dog or cat.

We then ask you to make or equines an appointment in order to meet the animal. Our kennel,equine and cattery staff are committed to the welfare of the animals and there may not be a member of staff available if you arrive without an appointment.

When you arrive, you will be asked to fill out a form, which will guide our kennel or cattery staff to the type of dog or cat that meets your criteria. If the one you have made an appointment to see isn’t what you are looking for, the staff will keep your form to contact you when a suitable pet becomes available. You will be introduced to the dog or cat and given time to spend with them. We will discuss the animal’s temperament and any special requirements the animal needs. After the initial visit, you will be given a 24 hour period to consider whether you want to continue with the rehoming procedure. If you call back and confirm that you would like to proceed with the adoption, we will arrange for a member of AVV to visit your property for a ‘pre-home check’ to see that the environment is suitable for the animal you want to rehome. All members of the household MUST meet the pet (in the case of dogs, this includes existing family dogs) prior to them coming to live with you. If you are in rented accommodation we will require written permission from your landlord. Each dog or cat will have had a health check, been wormed, had flea treatment and been vaccinated. They will also be neutered (as long as this is medically possible). It is part of the adoption agreement that you will have your dog or cat neutered if it has not already been carried out -it is your responsibility to see that this is done. (Failure to do so may result in the dog returning to AVV). All dogs or cats will be micro-chipped. Dogs will need a collar and tag inscribed with your name and address; this has been a legal requirement for dogs since April 2016. On re-homing, we ask for a minimum donation towards the work of the Sanctuary; this will enable us to continue providing refuge for unwanted animals and help towards some of our costs. Once the dog or cat has been adopted, we will always be available to offer support and advice and will help you in any way we can.

 

Points to consider

That you have enough time to spend with your dog or cat or equine. A dog should not be left on its own for longer than 5 hours and must be able to go to the toilet and exercise. A cat needs access to the outside and to have quality time spent with it every day.

 

The amount of exercise your dog will need

A dog needs regular daily exercise (at least twice a day) regardless of weather conditions.

 

Grooming requirements

Breed and coat type will affect the amount your dog or cat moults. This will determine the amount of grooming (and vacuuming) required.

 

The costs involved

Food; veterinary bills; vaccinations; worming; flea treatments; neutering and unexpected veterinary bills for illness or injury. Pet insurance is advisable. Making arrangements while you are away on holiday Boarding kennels/cattery; pet sitter. House training Even an adult dog or cat when settling into a new home may have accidents. Be prepared for some re-training and cleaning if necessary.

 

Chewing and destructive behaviour

This can be a result of boredom, stress or habit. Some re-training/behavioural work may be required. That you are happy to deal and cope with any problems that may arise It is likely that you will have some problems with a rescued dog or cat or equine which will require calm, gentle handling, a lot of patience and consistency.
